Do you remember the first record, CD, Cassette Tape, 8-Track, or audio file you purchased or received as a gift?

This is inspired by oLahav: in the discussion on favorite albums he wrote: “Demon Days, the Gorillaz- one of the first albums I’ve ever bought. It’s sort of a concept album, and it has some surprisingly good songs even if you’re not a rap/hip hop fan.”

I remember dancing in the back yard to Cyndi Lauper and Madonna, but the first record (a 45 single) I purchased was “Eye of the Tiger” by Survivor. The first CD’s I bought with my own money were Otis Redding “The Dock of the Bay” and John Lennon’s Imagine. (I bought them at the same time. :)

What about you?

When I was young I mostly listened to my parents’ albums, which were mostly 60’s and 70’s classic rock ,like the Beatles and Simon and Garfunkel, and then some pop like ABBA.

The very first CD (I grew up after the records era) I bought was The Best of U2: 1980-1990, which is still one of my top favourite albums (though it doesn’t really count as an album since it’s a greatest hits collection). It’s one of the few CDs I can listen to while driving.

The first non greatest hits album was the Dark Side of the Moon. It’s more than a classic, it’s a legend.

The first album I got as a gift was Fleetwood Mac’s Greatest Hits, which is incredible too… all the big ones are in there.

The first music DVD I bought was U2’s Rattle and Hum, though I bought the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Live at Slane Castle on the same day. They’re both really great, I watch them whenever I have the chance.

Oh, the memories…

Anyway, that’s a great discussion. Does anybody else want to share their experiences?

The first tape I bought was when I was 11, I was in an HMV or Music World at the Upper Canada Mall in Newmarket with my parents and I purchased “(What’s The Story) Morning Glory” by Oasis.

I also grew up listening to my parents music collection (a scary thought at first, but looking back now I see they didn’t have the worst taste). The highlights included some Beatles, Billy Joel, John Lennon’s Imagine, Traveling Wilbury’s, and Eric Clapton’s solo stuff.

The first cassette tape that I bought was “Dookie” by Green Day a classic album and still Green Day’s best in my opinion. First CD I ever bought was the “Blue Album” by Weezer and probably qualifies as my “first album adored”.

The first album I ever bought myself was Coldplay’s X&Y. Seems very recent but I never really bought CDs growing up!
